5 Tips to Make Marketing Easy for Small Remodeling & Building Contractors

Home Builder and Remodeler Marketing Tips

As small business owners, we all know how vital marketing is to our success. However, many of us are spinning so many plates; we don’t have time to stop and create a plan.

If you’re a remodeler, builder, or contractor, your primary marketing mission is to make your business look good. You want potential customers to find you online and be impressed with your work!

When working with our clients, we first recommend creating manageable plans they can maintain with consistency. Our second piece of advice is setting a realistic budget.

Remember: if you overspend at the beginning of the year, you won’t stick with the plan. We work with clients that spend anywhere from $400 - $50,000+ a month on marketing. The bigger the budget doesn't always equal better results!

We’ve pulled together a list below of five straightforward tips to make your business look good and maintain a marketing plan that fits your budget.

1. Set Up a System
It might be helpful to put together an essential marketing checklist. Example: The list could include the steps to follow at the end of every project, such as hiring a photographer, saving images to your online storage space, uploading photos to your website and Houzz profile, and scheduling the project on your social media calendar.

2. Research Other Brands for Ideas
This idea may sound odd, but it’s helpful to see what’s happening in your industry, or even other industries! Jot down a few notes and ask yourself, what are they doing that you like? What are they doing well? Don’t copy anyone’s work or style, but look for broader industry trends that compliment your brand.

3. Create a Content Calendar
We’re all about a good plan! It’s so much easier to follow a system than reinvent the wheel every time you post on social media. Try to schedule out things like your blogs, website updates, and social media a few weeks or months at a time. You’ll love having your ideas organized and not scrambling to think of things at the last minute!

4. Hire Someone to Help You!
If marketing isn’t your thing, then consider hiring someone to do it for you. You provide the information; they create content and make you look good! We help most of our clients with content creation. We schedule a consistent time to check-in each month and hear what they’re up to, and create a monthly marketing plan.

5. Create a Yearly Marketing Plan
Our final recommendation is to develop a yearly marketing plan. Start manageable and straightforward; what items can you do well and consistently? It’s okay to focus on just a few marketing elements and do them well. Slowly add to your toolbox as more resources become available (i.e., time, money, or hiring outside help) Set a yearly date to review what worked and update your plan.
